Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense is used to talk about something that is happening now or around now.
The most important pattern is:
am / is / are + verb-ing
For example:
I am eating.
She is studying.
They are playing.
🔤 1. The easiest way to recognize it
Look for:
am / is / are + verb-ing
Examples:
I am working.
He is sleeping.
We are studying.
The children are playing.
These are all examples of the present continuous.
So remember:
am/is/are + -ing → present continuous
📘 2. What does “continuous” mean?
Continuous means something is in progress.
It has started, but it is not finished yet.
For example:
I am eating.
This means I started eating, and I am still eating now.
Another example:
Daniel is studying.
He started studying, and he is still studying now.
🧩 3. When do we use the present continuous?
We mainly use it for something happening now.
For example, imagine you are looking outside and see a dog running.
You can say:
The dog is running.
Someone is cooking right now:
My mother is cooking.
Several students are taking a test:
The students are taking a test.
🔍 4. The basic structure
The structure is:
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
Examples:
I am eating.
You are eating.
He is eating.
She is eating.
It is raining.
We are eating.
They are eating.
The verb eat becomes:
eat → eating
🧠 5. Which form of “to be”?
Just like we learned before:
I → am
I am waiting.
He / She / It → is
He is waiting.
She is waiting.
It is raining.
You / We / They → are
You are waiting.
We are waiting.
They are waiting.
🗂️ 6. Singular and plural subjects
Remember:
One person or thing = singular.
More than one = plural.
Singular
The baby is crying.
Emma is cooking.
My phone is charging.
Plural
The babies are crying.
Emma and Lisa are cooking.
My phones are charging.
Why?
The baby = it → is
The babies = they → are
Emma and Lisa = they → are
🎯 7. More examples with plural subjects
Plural subjects use are.
The students are talking.
My parents are watching TV.
Those birds are flying.
The workers are building a house.
Our neighbors are having dinner.
Notice that the subject can be a plural noun, not only the word they.
For example:
The students are studying.
means:
They are studying.
💬 8. How to make the -ing form
Usually, simply add -ing.
| Basic verb | -ing form |
|---|---|
| play | playing |
| eat | eating |
| work | working |
| study | studying |
| read | reading |
| watch | watching |
| sleep | sleeping |
| talk | talking |
Examples:
The children are playing.
Mr. Lee is working.
We are watching a movie.
🔤 9. Verbs ending in “e”
Many verbs that end in e lose the e before adding -ing.
make → making
take → taking
write → writing
dance → dancing
come → coming
Examples:
Anna is making breakfast.
He is writing an email.
The guests are coming inside.
Don't write:
Write:
📘 10. Some short verbs double the final letter
Some short verbs double the final consonant before -ing.
For example:
run → running
sit → sitting
swim → swimming
get → getting
Examples:
The boy is running.
Please wait. I am getting ready.
The athletes are swimming.
You don't need to memorize every spelling rule immediately. Just learn common examples as you see them.
🧩 11. Negative sentences
To make a negative present continuous sentence, put not after am/is/are.
Structure:
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
Examples:
I am not sleeping.
She is not working.
The dog isn't eating.
They aren't listening.
Common short forms:
is not → isn't
are not → aren't
Examples:
He isn't watching TV.
We aren't waiting for the bus.
🔍 12. Questions
For questions, put am/is/are before the subject.
Structure:
Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing?
Examples:
Are you studying?
Is she working?
Are the children sleeping?
Is your computer working?
Remember:
Am/Is/Are + subject + -ing?
🧠 13. Short answers
Are you studying?
Yes, I am.
No, I'm not.
Is he working?
Yes, he is.
No, he isn't.
Are they sleeping?
Yes, they are.
No, they aren't.
Notice that the answer uses am/is/are, not do/does.
🗂️ 14. Don't use do/does with present continuous
This is a common mistake.
Why?
Because present continuous already uses:
am/is/are + -ing
🎯 15. Simple present vs. present continuous
This is very important.
Simple present
We use the simple present for things that happen usually, regularly, or repeatedly.
I walk to work every day.
This is my routine.
Present continuous
We use the present continuous for something happening now.
I am walking to work now.
I am doing it at this moment.
Compare:
Sara works at a hospital.
This is her usual job.
Sara is working now.
She is doing her job at this moment.
💬 16. Another comparison
The shop opens at 9 every morning.
This is a regular fact or schedule.
The shop is opening now.
It is happening now.
So:
opens → simple present
is opening → present continuous
🔤 17. Another comparison
We watch TV after dinner.
This is a habit.
We are watching TV now.
This is happening now.
So:
watch → simple present
are watching → present continuous
📘 18. Words often used with present continuous
You may see words such as:
- now
- right now
- at the moment
- currently
Examples:
I am studying now.
She is driving right now.
The children are sleeping at the moment.
These words can help you recognize that something is happening now.
But remember:
You don't always need one of these words.
For example:
Look! The baby is crying.
The word now is not there, but we understand that the crying is happening now.
🧩 19. “Look!” and “Listen!”
We often use present continuous when we notice something happening.
Look! The dog is running.
Listen! Someone is singing.
Look! The birds are flying.
The action is happening at the time we are speaking.
🔍 20. Present continuous with “right now”
Right now means at this exact time.
I am talking to you right now.
The chef is preparing our food right now.
They are waiting for the bus right now.
🧠 21. Be careful with the subject
The -ing part doesn't change for different subjects.
Only am/is/are changes.
For example:
I am working.
He is working.
She is working.
We are working.
They are working.
The verb stays:
working
🗂️ 22. Common mistakes
The present continuous uses a verb ending in -ing.
He → is.
Children = they → are.
🎯 23. A very easy formula
Remember this:
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
Examples:
I am eating.
She is cooking.
The students are studying.
For negative:
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
He isn't sleeping.
For questions:
Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing?
Are they waiting?
💬 24. The most important difference
Remember these three sentences:
She is happy.
→ to be + description
→ simple present
She likes coffee.
→ normal verb
→ simple present
She is drinking coffee.
→ is + verb-ing
→ present continuous
This is a very useful pattern to remember.
Quick Memory Guide
Simple present
She is happy.
She likes coffee.
Present continuous
She is drinking coffee.
The easiest shortcut:
am/is/are + -ing = present continuous
And remember:
I → am
He/She/It → is
You/We/They → are
